To say I was surprised when I saw this site appear from under the forty-two other tabs I had open in Firefox would be an understatement. The detail and colour that has gone into the flowers took my breath away. The actual content of the site (content is king remember?) doesn't particularly appeal to me. It tends to be more personal and rather "flowery" at times too. I just keep going back to look at the flowers.

The Problem with Font Management

By now you've probably heard about Linotype's FontExplorer X. If you're a Mac user you've probably even tried it out. Searching Google will net you plenty of reviews and opinions and you might even designers bemoaning the lack lustre state of font management software.

While I agree that there could be a lot of improvement in the software that allows you to browse the fonts you have and manage groups of fonts, I don't think this is the area that needs the most attention. The biggest problem with font management is activation. If I've used a typeface in a document, I shouldn't have to reactivate that font every time I need to edit the document. It should be done automatically by the system.

Until Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) was released fonts on all operating systems were still activated in the same archaic fashion as they were when WYSIWYG desktop publishing first emerged: by moving them in and out of a special fonts folder. Even third party font management software activated fonts by placing alias' or shortcuts into the system fonts folder. This is still true of today's operating systems, although thankfully, they have since made the revolutionary step forward of not requiring you to reboot your computer before they become available to applications.

When Apple released Panther they included an application called Font Book that has been heavily derided by many in the design industry because it's slow and the interface is rather clunky. What Font Book does bring to the table though, is the ability to deactivate fonts without removing them from the fonts folder. This feature is actually built into the operating system and Font Book is just a GUI that allows you to access it. However, you're still required to install fonts into a fonts folder to make them available to Font Book and other applications.

While this system level font activation is a step forward, it doesn't go far enough. If I open a document that uses a font not currently active, the system should automatically activate it for me, and then deactivate it when it is no longer needed. This shouldn't be difficult. Currently when an application opens a document, it checks the system to see if the fonts used are available. What happens next depends on the software. Applications like Microsoft Word will automatically find a substitute font, usually without letting you know that this has happened. Professional design applications will usually inform you that the font isn't available and allow you to select a substitute, or activate the font.

Some font management software even offers plugs-ins for some design applications that will automatically activate fonts for you, but the applications they support are very limited. This shouldn't be a third party opportunity, it needs be handled transparently in the background by the operating system.

Font management has always been neglected by operating system manufacturers because it isn't sexy. You might assume that the core customers all being creative professionals would provide the impetus for Apple to address issues like this, but they have all but ignored the issue. Microsoft isn't doing any better. The third party font management software available for Windows is woefully out of date and sifting through all the information available about Vista turns up absolutely nothing regarding changes or innovations to font management on that system.

If you live in or around Brooklyn, NY (or can get there), you can catch what promises to be a fantastic show this Sunday, and help the victims of Hurricane Katrina all at the same time. From the They Might Be Giants' email:

TMBG will be jumping up on stage for a short set with 8 other fine acts as part of a Katrina Benefit this Sunday, September 25th @ Southpaw in Park Slope in Brooklyn. You can do your part just by showing up for the good times. ALL proceeds will go to the American Red Cross, Second Harvest and Humanity First. Joining TMBG will be the pride of New Jersey, The Wrens, and our Barsuk Records pals Matthew and Ira from Nada Surf.

Echo and the Bunnymen: Siberia

It has been four years since The Bunnymen have graced us with an album of completely original material, and "Siberia" makes me believe the wait was well worth it. This album was produced by Hugh Jones who produced the band's second album, "Heaven Up Here," in 1981. This simple fact will surely bring about comparisons to their early work and references to the band "returning to their classic sound."

For me, there is no kind of "return" or attempts to sound like their younger selves on "Siberia," and there haven't been since the band's 1997 "comeback" album, "Evergreen." Since then, I believe the band has simply grown, and matured, honing what they do best with an eternal exploration of their core themes. This album shows that Hugh Jones has done the same, and truly "gets" the band. For as lush and complex as the bands arrangements are, there is not a bit of it lost or muddled, which could so easily happen with the Bunnymen's swirling, psychedelic, dream pop.

If you're a fan, I don't believe you'll be disappointed with this album. Ian McCulloch's voice is at an all time best, shifting from husky and deep to melodic, emotional, and romantic without effort. Lyrically, too, the album is strong and just what you'd expect from the Bunnymen.

My only complaint about "Siberia" is that there is no sense of a complete, homogenous album here. These are 11 incredibly good songs, and they really show off McCulloch and Sergeant's talent and diversity at song writing, but, to some extent it works against them when listening to the entire album. This is the only thing that keeps this album in the realm of "really good... but not quite great". Still, several of the songs (in particular, "Stormy Weather," "Parthenon Drive," and "Everything Kills You") will probably be in heavy rotation playlist for a very long time.

Today is the official US release, and "Siberia" is now available for download at the iTunes Music Store, and the CD is 18% off at Amazon.

there are a lot of free fonts sites such as da font which feature tons of great fonts you can use.

jacks fonts however, are in a league of their own, they don't have those little almost rights which free fonts usually have. besides that his designs (which feature his fonts) are pretty great themselves.

Tenement Halls

About four or five years ago, I discovered a really great band called The Rock*A*Teens. As soon as I started digging on their music, they broke up. This happens to me all the time. I don't know if I just jinx bands, or what, but it's happened more times than I care to count, and it's always pretty disappointing.

The Rock*A*Teens played what I can only describe as melodic, drunken pop noise, and they did so very loudly. That may not sound like the best endorsement ever, but trust me, their sound was incredibly unique, and always wonderful to listen too. The almost always tragic nature of the lyrics combined with arrangements and singing that sounded like a man who had lost everything, made for what I think was a kind of blues for modern times. The first time I heard The Arcade Fire, I couldn't help but think that they had to be big fans of Rock*A*Teens.

All is not lost, however. I was really happy to find out that the frontman and songwriter for the band, Chris Lopez, released an album with his new band, Tenement Halls, a couple weeks ago. I was even happier when I found out it was available on iTunes. Yay!

The music on this debut, "Knitting Needles & Bicycle Bells", is not dissimilar to the Rock*A*Teens. Lopez's leadership of both bands is evident. Tenement Halls is, however, a much more mature endeavor. The arrangements are more tight, the singing less belting, but powerful none the less. Any given song on this album would satisfy me on it's own. They are intelligent, passionate, rich, and... epic. If I were a drinkin' man, "Knitting Needles & Bicycle Bells" would definitely be my drinking buddy.

The album is now available for download at the iTunes Music Store, or you can purchase the CD from Amazon.

And the best part of this all, is that download.com has put up a free download from the album.

My japanese exchange student Zatoichi-son was making toast very nicely for me this morning and he remarked that our brand new rivington toaster had a peculiar defect and that our toast had come out funny. he said it look like some planet of the apes, bathing ape, BAPE thing but i have no idea what he was talking about. he told me to put it on ebay because people apparently like those things and he said it was a miracle or "miraculous toast". i wanted to eat it so badly but he was very stern and steadfast about not consuming the toast and to put it on ebay. i don't know why he's making me put it in shoes section but he's the boss. his english is not so great so i have to do this. anyways enjoy the toast. i will keep it safe and sound and will not eat it. happy bidding, no reserve.

IconFactory just released IconBuilder 8.0 with support for icons up to 1024x1024.
What's interesting is that an ICO containing only a 512x512 32bit icon is about 1mb. Consider what will happen to an application like Word that has about 16 different document icons contained in the executable, along with the actual app icon. Word is 11.76Mb now, so if all the icons are updated to the hi-res format that Tiger now supports, the file size will more than double!

I think this is a good argument for moving to something like scalable vector icons, which Microsoft has announced for Vista, but hasn't yet added support for. (Beta 1 only supports ICOs up to 256x256).

It would make sense to treat icons like fonts were handled in the early days of the Mac. Bitmaps for low-res (screen) versions and then anything bigger than 128x128 uses a vector. This could be a performance hit on the processor, but I imagine that would easily be handed off to the graphics card.

Munich Soccer/Football Stadium

Herzog and deMueron's football stadium in Munich has recently been completed. The stadiums exterior skin changes colors from white to red to blue depending on which team is occupying the stadium. Like much of H & dM's work the stadium plays on the idea of design in 2 and 3 dimensions to create compelling architecture.

Domus magazine reports on a new underground winery with irregularly vaulted wine cellars. The unique profile of the vaulted area is made of prefabricated bricks and trusses. The underground area saves energy through constant airflow allowing for natural cooling and heating of the barrel rooms. The forms are quite striking as well.

In this month's issue of Metropolis (this month's issue isn't quite up yet) they have a little article about a fairly recent Housing project in Spain by the dutch firm MVRDV, called Mirador. Apparently a lot of the neighboring housing has been built in a neo-traditional style, the MVRDV project displays their usual creative prowess and whimsy. Check it.

The building displays it's function through exterior color, orange/red for circulation for example.

They were allowed to build higher through work with the local government and putting the courtyard in the middle of the building.

N| Your ID card - all about yourself. Describe yourself, your background, your neighbours, your work, your working environment, etc.
EB| I was born in Rosario (Argentina) in 1977. I always like drawing and I started studied graphic design when I finished the secondary school (1995). A couple of years latter I began to work in this field. Then I decided to moved to Spain (2000) where I started to work as art director till now. I also spend my time painting, drawing, taking photos... Some of my personal works have been published in several contemporary art/design magazines and visual projects around the world.

N| What’s your relationship with your environment and your city; what do you love and what would you change
EB| I live just next of Malasaña, it´s one of the neighbourhoods the most I like in Madrid. it has antique buildings, weird people, lots of urban art and it´s full of bars, good source of inspiration.

N| Graphics, design or art?
EB| There are many pieces of art that have only a commercial purpose, and many graphics or design pieces with a great artistic value. From my point of view, how do you call it is not important.

N| What are your sources of inspiration
EB| Urban art, other designers/artist, things that happen to you, things that you´d like to happen to you, cinema, music, many hours in internet...

N| What kind of materials do you use in making your job?
EB| Carton, felt-tip pens, aerosol, things that we use every day in the offices, synthetic painting, found stuff in the street, squared sheets... I like using materials witch are not in use conventional.

N| The best work you’ve done

N| The worst work you’ve done
EB| Some of the works that I do to diary in the company I work.

N| Why that is the worst work.
EB| In the companies you have no time to raise something serious, often I am satisfied with the result, but most of the time is not enough to make something awkward. On the other hand in the multinational companies when you do something it has to pass for many steps before coming out, in this long stairs always there is a stupid guy waiting for throws you down.

N| Art or market?
EB| ART. Market is the dark side of the art.

N| If you were a food you were…? Can you design it for us?
EB| I think I where a salad, a lot of colored stuffs.

N| If you were a film you were…?
EB| All About Lily Chou Chou, I have nothing to do with Japan but It was one of the film that most I like, so, If I were a film I wish I were this one.

N| If you were a book you were…?
EB| “The end of Print” of David Carson. When I started in this field I saw this book, and it encouraged me to discover that the graphic design is not only a leaflet that bother you in the mailbox.

N| What are you listening just now, and what music do you listen while working
EB| Rigth now, Arcade fire. While I´m working: Medeski Martin & Wood (Combustication), James Taylor Quartet, Flanger, Dauerfisch, Tarwater, looper, Sparklehorses, Grandaddy, weezer, David Holmes, Portishead, Jay Jay Johanson (Whiskey)...

Dust Jacket Designs (1926-1947)

If you've never browsed the New York Public Library's Digital Gallery, take a few hours out of your day and browse. It's like looking at a iceberg, you keep finding more below the surface. This collection I found interesting in comparing book design from then to now. For the most part the designs are limited to one or two typefaces and 2 colors at most. In contrast to today's multi-layed photoshop monstrosities. It's said to not judge a book by it's cover, but perhaps it's why I don't read novels anymore.

There's many other collections to browse as well.

Advertising Ephemera

Ephemera is the general term for printed material that is intended to be used for a short period of time. And much of this is discarded. The shampoo bottle, the insert in your newspaper, the wedding invitation, etc. Lately I have be fascinated with looking at older printed works from the early 1900's. Much of it seems to thoughtfully done as to conserve costs of printing but create a lavish looking piece. This site is full of gems if you poke beyond the link.

New Icons

A couple of quick links. FastIcon has released a set Batman icons. So if you loved Batman as much as i did you can share the love with you're computer. The icons are fairly dark though so they the details are difficult to make out at 16x16 (detail / list view).

Buyicons.com has also released a button box set intended for Mac OS X developers who need small tollbar icons for applications that use the brushed metal interface. These icons are very tight and well worth the $49 price tag.

I always get excited when I find people that seem to have almost the exact same musical tastes as I have. Scissorkick has rocketed to the top of my charts in very short order because of that. Covering the realm where Downtempo, Indie Rock, and Idm converge, Scissorkick posts fantastic tunes from fantastic people, and all downloadable tracks are fully legal. If you're in the market for quality new stuff, this blog is a marvelous jumping off point.

So back in May I made an early mention of Wendy's overhauling their marketing strategy. Today and in the past couple weeks, you have probably seen some of their new commercials such as the "Do What Tastes Right" series and "Good to be Square" series. Further more, they have recently launched goodtobesquare.com, a hip little white square who all the little circles love. This is certainly going to be making its rounds on the internet, from inbox to inbox to blogs such as this one. The the question remains however, Does it have what it takes to get to the #2 spot -- overcoming Burger King or even the #1 spot holder McDonalds? Only time will tell but this is a great start to their campaign. Also a quick note: Wendy’s has also launched dowhattastesright.com which seems to be just an alternate site from their homepage at wendys.com

Hernan Diaz Alonso, the latest winner of MoMA/PS1's Young Architects Program to build temporary summer pavilions at the Queens based PS1 has created a futuristic pavilion with elaborate computer generated forms. The structure was generated using "film animation software" according to the article and points to Diaz Alonso's fondness for science fiction and futuristic forms.
