Vinyl form IconFactory

Another set of stock icons from The IconFactory. This set is another new style called Vinyl using all the same icon concepts as the other main sets.
IconFactory is also selling EPS versions of the icons. The various bitmap versions of the icons only come in 16x16, 24x24 and 32x32 so I assume that if you want anything larger you would have to buy the EPS versions as well and create them yourself. Icons often need a bit of work to sharpen them up, even at 64x64, because bicubic sampling rarely provides good results when there are a lot of straight lines.

Defusing Beck

"One of the more interesting music DVDs to surface of late is the Beck Guero limited edition DVD created by D-Fuse to coincide with the release of Beck's new album of the same name. D-Fuse is known for its VJ-based abstract motion and film work and seems to have relished putting together the 30+ unique videos comprising the disc's content."

Lessons learned from Revenge of the Sith

1. When the leader says “Everything’s fine, go wait on the LAVA PLANET", be uspicious.
2. The Dark Side of the Force is called “The Dark Side” for a reason. It’s not like “The Dark Side of the Moon".
3. Robots with cutesy voices are annoying, not adorable. That goes double for aliens with cutesy voices. Triple for robots with cutesy voices and smoker’s cough.
4. For some reason, robots talk to each other in English, instead of using wifi or bluetooth or something.
5. Coruscant OB/GYN technology leaves something to be desired. [Update: “Luke” and Leia” are clearly the Naboo words for “Morphine” and “Epidural"]
6. 20 years seems like nothing when you’re ruling the galaxy.
7. Don’t forget what happened to your mother in the last movie, or there will be extra exposition.
8. Darth Vader is not scarier with an artful allusion to Frankenstein.

Smart Music

Tracking down the loads of free MP3s offered up as promos by record labels can be quite the chore. This is why the gods of the internet have given us sites like Smart Music. Offering both compilations and an archive of individual tracks, Smart Music serves up the goods in a free and legal fashion.

Grow, the latest compilation (the 7th in a series that includes an all Ninja Tune Must Have), assembles "a fresh uplifting take on what was known in the 90's as New York City's experimental Ambient / Dub / Hip-Hop scene". You can even download the tracks independantly or as a zip file. Isnt that nice?

Dig deeper and you'll find more lovelies from the likes of Prefuse 73, Spoon, Bloc Party, Panthers, Lemon Jelly, The Postal Service, and the obligatory "much much more".

Wendy's Overhuals Marketing Strategies

CHICAGO (Adage.com) -- After falling behind resurgent rivals with two failed post-Dave Thomas advertising campaigns, Wendy’s International is shedding its folksy image and one-size-fits all message.

In its place, the burger chain is returning to its square hamburger roots, boosting its marketing budget, targeting three distinct consumer groups and making its first foray into Internet advertising. It appears that Wendy’s has adopted an “If you can’t beat 'em, join 'em” strategy.

Competitve category
“It’s no secret we’ve faced some challenging times at Wendy’s,” said Ian Rowden, executive vice president and chief marketing officer. He said the number of competitors grew from 15 chains that can generate a $1 billion in revenues to 24 by 2004. Wendy's is the third-largest burger chain behind McDonald's Corp. and Burger King Corp.

Since the company's founder, Dave Thomas, died in 2002, the burger chain named for one of his daughters has struggled to find a voice for its ad messages that was as effective of his. Mr. Thomas who starred in more than 800 commercials over 13 years. Wendy's even tried using an "unofficial" spokesman, "Mr. Wendy," a hapless burger evangelist. Wendy's dumped the widely criticized campaign after only eight months. The chain's agency is Interpublic Group of Cos.' McCann Erickson Worldwide.

“We don’t have to be folksy to be what the Wendy’s brand is,” said Mr. Rowden. “The Wendy’s brand has always had a little attitude. Dave had a little attitude and he pushed things differently, but the way the brand was personified through him made it more folksy.”

Period of transition
“The offerings consumers faced in our world have changed a lot,” he said. “Our competitors quite simply got better at what they do, and Wendy’s has been in a period of transition, particularly from an advertising perspective. We have been somewhat out of the dialogue over time, and it’s time for us to take some fairly decisive action on a number of fronts.”

That includes bringing new products to market faster, taking advantage of its reputation for quality service and better advertising...

Dressing up for Episode III?

If you're too embarrassed to dress up for the midnight premier of Episode III, Everaldo has released a new set of Star Wars icons so you can dress your desktop up instead.

The set includes 17 icons mostly consisting of helmets and lightsabers, with a few fighter planes and an R2D2 thrown in for good measure.

Now, should I put the Darth Vader helmet on my hard drive or the Bobba Fett helmet?

iPod icons from Fast Icon

The iPods minimilist and shiny design makes it the perfect subject for a Mac OS X style icon, and it seems that everyone has produced a set. The most recent being Fast Icon.

They've produced a set of nine icons covering all the currently available iPods (including the U2 iPod) and a "web" iPod which uses an overlay of Apple's iDisc icon. All of them are rendered realistically, much like every other iPod icon that is available.

Hopefully we'll start to see some more interesting iPod icon designs soon because these don't offer much over the default icon, other than being able to match the icon to the actual model that you own.

Netlabel Directory

Lurking below the sheer mass of purchasable MP3 sites like iTunes and Napster is the quietly growing Netlabel movement. Netlabels are simply online record labels that give their content away for free. In raw defiance of the motto "you get what you pay for", some of these operations actually offer some up some really really good stuff and a modicum of exploring can quickly yield a payoff of new and free music that you actually like.

Where better to begin this foray into the realm of costless, DRMless tunes than Archive.org's Netlabel Archive? Broken up by genres, this archive has hundreds of links to sites that thrive outside of the music business model.

Two stellar examples of sites that offer top quality audio are Thinner/Autoplate (Dub, Tech House, Ambient) and Tokyodawn (Downtempo, Hip Hop, NuJazz).

Apple releases Tiger 10.4.1 update

First reviews seem to be positive. I'm still having issues with imap mail accounts.. so I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird for now. Be sure to run your software updates! A good rule of thumb is to repair disk permissions before and after updating.
